Come and join us at the inaugural Adventure Logistics Company potjiekos Masterchef challenge. This charity event will see 10 teams fight it out over a Saturday afternoon to crown the ultimate potjiekos master.
This years event will be held in honour of the Southern African Wildlife Colleges K-9 unit, an organization that provides much needed support to the anti poaching efforts being carried out in the Greater Kruger park region. We aim to raise at least R15 000.00 to go towards the kennels at the college, which will enable the college to train their kennel hand to improve the handling of the incredible pack of dogs. For more information on the work carried out by the K9 unit, click here.
To ensure a fair completion, all teams will be provided with access to a pantry, where they will need to select ingredients from and plan their three course meal to present to judges. Cooking stations will e pre set up for each team, ensuring that each team has exactly the same set of tools at their disposal. Except for knives, no external equipment will be allowed into the preparation areas.
Competition Format:
Teams will be judged on three fronts as follows:
Team spirit, which will be judged through the course of the day, based on the camaraderie and general atmosphere of your station
The meal itself, which will consist of a three course dinner, prepared solely on site from fresh ingredients, using only open fire. Meals will be judged on taste, as well as creativity and presentation, and lastly,
Theme and Decor. Each team will need to choose a theme, according to which they will need to decorate their station and set up a dinner table, where they will after presenting their tasting plates to the judges, will need to serve their meal to two or three guests (allocated by the organizers), which will include some form of dinner party “entertainment” between the main course and dessert. (Because of the blind pantry style of the competition, there need not be any connection between the theme and the meal)
Teams need to consist of minimum of three and a maximum of six persons.
A full set of rules will be provided to participants upon entry.

Pots of Hope
The purpose of Pots of Hope is to give homeless and destitute people a dignified and enjoyable dining experience in which they are served by waiters and can order from a menu of delicious meals prepared by participants in the potjiekos competition. And to have fun at the same time.
The event will take place at Ferndale Bible Chapel (corner York and Dover Street, Ferndale Randburg) on 12 May 2018 from 0800 am onwards.
The rules are simple:
• Potjiekos teams to comprise a maximum of four people.
• Teams to provide their own ingredients.
• Vegetables may be sliced, diced, chopped or shredded beforehand to save time.
• All food is to be cooked in a potjie at the venue and no food may be precooked.
• Fires may be lit from 8am onwards and all food needs to be ready by 12:15.
• Please notify us in advance (by 27 April) what you’ll be preparing so we can include it on the menu.
• Points will be awarded for presentation, display, taste and originality.
• Rice may be cooked in a potjie with your meal, but large pots of rice will be provided.
• Leftover food can be taken home or packaged and frozen for redistribution.
We will be looking for volunteers to wait tables, and teams may assign two of their team members to volunteer as waiters should they so wish.
While cooking is taking place, tables and chairs will be laid out and decorated to create a restaurant environment.
Guests will start arriving from 11:00 onwards and have the chance to walk around and take a look at what chefs are preparing. During this time, the judges will make their deliberations. The waiters will then guide the guests to their seats, at which stage we will welcome them and say grace. The waiters will serve cold drinks and take guests’ orders.
After lunch the judges will announce the winning potjie, followed by a word of thanks and closing prayer.

North Road Potjie Festival
The North road event is held annually in the Eastern Townships of Quebec in Stanbridge East on the Saturday of May long weekend, this year the date is May 20th.
This is the 7th annual invite only Potjie festival, the only of its kind in Canada. Our rules are true to those of other events, no pre-cooked anything allowed and potjiekos must all be made on site. The winners are chosen by ballot by those in attendance and a trophy is awarded to the winner of the open class as well as medals to second and third finishers.
1st, 2nd and 3rd place medals are also given to winners of the other classes of curry, chilli and dessert. Unlike other competitions where there are random locations to cook, our festival is a single line of Potjies, this is a sight to behold and get very excited about!!
We are looking at hitting the 60 in a row milestone this year, does any of the South African events do this?
The attendance has been increasing an average of 25% every year, I will be happy to post new pics and Youtube video soon.
There is no entry fee, but it is in benefit of “Hope in South Africa”, a global partnership that nurtures youth in the Karoo, all donations go to this cause.
Yes Potjies are a thing in Canada, we all use “Best Duty”, of course!!
